East meets West in this hand-drawn batik cushion - a true conversion of age-old batik technique and modern, almost pop art, design. Crafted from a Lou Zeldis (late American artist who lived in Java, working with artisans to conserve Indonesian textile traditions) collectible, it is an eclectic aficionado must-have!
Hand drawn using traditional wax resist patterning techniques in Java Indonesia, the batik takes a day to reconstruct as a pillow.
This cushion comes with a pre-filled down alternative insert and handwoven cotton backing in ivory.
Brilliantly detailed, the complex pattern and color combination of this textile are a result of a time-consuming series of waxing and dyeing repetitions performed by Lou Zeldis’ team of artisans at a batik studio in Solo. The motif is first hand drawn with molten wax onto the fabric and then dyed using 100% natural dyes. The blues are indigo and the soga browns are from three different kinds of tree bark. Over-dyeing of the two produces the black. It is this mastery of complex traditional processes that Lou Zeldis was working to preserve in the face of mechanized stamping and synthetic dyes.
With the passing of Lou Zeldis in 2012 and his studio no longer producing his works, pieces like these have become a true collectible to be treasured. The original textile was given second life and a chance to brighten up more than one home by Tarum, a natural dyeing workshop and weaving cooperative in Bali. All made start-to-finish in a fair trade environment.

Clean with a natural or mild cleanser (avoid harsh chemicals) and a soft cloth.
Vacuum regularly. Rotate every few months to even out wear, especially if the rug is located in a high traffic area. In case of a liquid spill, blot the spot using a white cloth to draw up the liquid; never rub a wet stain to prevent colors from bleeding. If further spot cleaning is required, entrust your rug to a professional dry cleaning service.
