Our secret to a great first (interior) impression? A rug that brings the whole space to life, while stopping everyone in their tracks! Handwoven with wool on a cotton base, we are loving the soft, sun-washed desert hues that pack one seriously chic (yet laid back) punch.

Handwoven entirely by hand on a foot loom, each rug takes 7 days to complete.

Rug pad recommended to better secure the rug in place.

This rug is consciously designed and ethically handcrafted in Egypt by the talented Killiim team and their artisan partners.

Kiliim’s story starts in Fowwa, a small village that sits on the western banks of the Nile Delta in Egypt. A UNESCO world heritage site and home to 365 mosques, domes, and Islamic monuments, Fowwa used to be a thriving hub for kilim weaving. Just decades ago, its used to house 2,000 kilim workshops but with decline in tourism and fast spread of cheaper, machine-made rugs - by 2016, less than 200 remained.

Founded by Ibrahim Shams and his wife Noha El-Taher, who first got the idea to start a social enterprise as they were looking for a traditional Egyptian kilim rug that fit their aesthetic, Kiliim hopes to bring the age-old craft into the 21st century so it can stand the chance of sustaining a future.

Seamlessly blending traditional weaving techniques with a modern palette, Kiliim is doing just that. Initially partnering with 4 weavers from Fowwa, 5 years later, they are now working with almost 40 artisans - providing them and their families with stable incomes that are 50% higher than industry average in fair trade conditions.

And this is just the beginning. Noha and Ibrahim are looking to the future - growing their network of artisans, exploring additional indigenous crafts from all over Egypt and founding a weaving school that would further the age-old kilim craft. Creating a culture where the young people of Fowwa can take pride and continue to see potential in the craft of their ancestors.

HUIPIL CUSHIONS, BATIK & IKAT CUSHIONS, NAGA CUSHIONS, STRAPS & YOGA BAGS

Because these items are made with vintage textiles and may include leather accenting or hardware, we recommend that they are professionally dry cleaned when cleaning is required.

JASPE & JASPE BASURA

We recommend that cushions, rugs, throws and bed blankets from these collections are dry cleaned. This will ensure that colors retain their luster and fabric its shape.

TOTO & CHILE VERDE

Gently wash cushions, bed blankets and throws from these collections by hand, in cool water. Wrap the tassels in rubber bands before washing, use mild soap and line dry to maintain the piece's original shape.

BORNN CANDLES

Due to its smooth, non-porous surface made of glass, enamel is bacteria inhibiting and easy to clean. Clean with lime juice and baking soda using the smooth side of the cleaning sponge or a soft brush.

TENSIRA RANGE

We recommend hand-washing these fabrics with mild soap. For tie & dye pieces, please wash them at 30°C and striped pieces at 40°C and lay flat to dry. Dry cleaning is recommended for kapok-filled cushion inserts.

PETRIFIED WOOD

Clean with a natural or mild cleanser (avoid harsh chemicals) and a soft cloth.

RUGS

Vacuum regularly. Rotate every few months to even out wear, especially if the rug is located in a high traffic area. In case of a liquid spill, blot the spot using a white cloth to draw up the liquid; never rub a wet stain to prevent colors from bleeding. If further spot cleaning is required, entrust your rug to a professional dry cleaning service.

ART

While in storage, do not place objects on top of the artwork. Keep handling to a minimum when during the hanging process and hold your print only from the sides.  Fine art papers can scratch easily, so be very careful to avoid scraping anything across the surface of the print.

For cleaning we recommend using a clean, white, dry, soft lint-free cloth to gently wipe off dust and/or dirt. Use a white non-colored cloth will allow you to see when dust has been collected.

It is recommended that you never display giclee prints in direct sunlight and avoid high temperatures and humidity as it can cause yellowing.
