Jaspe Basura Cushion
Indigenous Guatemalan weaving style meets monochrome color palette and boho finishing. This oversized cushion is a minimalist decor lover’s dream. Use it as a standalone accent on a chair, bed or couch or mix and match with our other Jaspe pieces.
Handcrafted using traditional ikat technique and woven on a foot pedal loom, the fabric takes nearly three weeks to dye and weave.
This cushion comes with a pre-filled cruelty-free down alternative insert.
An ode to an age-old Guatemalan weaving technique, 'Jaspe Basura' literally means 'ikat waste' in Spanish. The style got its name from ikat offcuts and scraps being picked up off the workshop floor, spun and then woven back together to create unexpected indigo patterns. (One weaver's trash is another weaver's treasure.)
While not in practice anymore, we couldn't help but recreate this indigenous yet modern style of weaving with our Jaspe Basura series. Reimagined in black and crudo colorway, the cushion is woven using a traditional ikat weaving technique where the yarns are tied by hand and then dyed, forming a pattern once let loose.
The fabric is then handwoven on a traditional foot loom in Alotenango by Luis and his father, while Luis' mother, Zoila, creates those 'oh so luscious' tassels. Once the textile is ready, Eulalia, seamstress extraordinaire, puts the finishing touches on the fabric and constructs the final pieces in Ciudad Vieja.

HUIPIL CUSHIONS, BATIK & IKAT CUSHIONS, XELA FLOOR POUFS, STRAPS & YOGA BAGS
Because these items are made with vintage textiles and may include leather accenting or hardware, we recommend that they are professionally dry cleaned when cleaning is required.
JASPE & JASPE BASURA
We recommend that cushions, rugs, throws and bed blankets from these collections are dry cleaned. This will ensure that colors retain their luster and fabric its shape.
TOTO & CHILE VERDE
Gently wash cushions, bed blankets and throws from these collections by hand, in cool water. Wrap the tassels in rubber bands before washing, use mild soap and line dry to maintain the piece's original shape.
Clean with a natural or mild cleanser (avoid harsh chemicals) and a soft cloth.
Vacuum regularly. Rotate every few months to even out wear, especially if the rug is located in a high traffic area. In case of a liquid spill, blot the spot using a white cloth to draw up the liquid; never rub a wet stain to prevent colors from bleeding. If further spot cleaning is required, entrust your rug to a professional dry cleaning service.
